How did your product innovation start?
Answer: The product innovation started as a research at the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City, Philippines. GEMS uses a novel technology developed to convert waste from the fruit-processing-industry into high-value products that are new in the market. The effort is led by the people in College of Engineering at USC.
What kinds of problems do you typically get to solve?
Answer: GEMS helps in sustaining the environment by processing the fruit wastes from the fruitprocessing
companies and turning them into high-value products that are new in the market. In this
way, the company is helping to reduce the wastes being disposed in the dumpsites and left to rot,
releasing foul odours and potentially hazardous leachates. Moreover, GEMS has succeeded in providing
jobs for the residents of the locality who had previously been scavenging dumpsites for their livelihood.

What are your different packaging materials and sizes?
Answer: Our products are packed in different packaging materials. We pack our products in stand-up
plastic pouches that are available in 100g, 250g, &500g. We also pack our products in kraft paper bag
that come in 10 lbs, 25 lbs (with PE lining), and 55 lbs (25 kg for our GEMS Feed Mix). We also customize
our packaging depending on the interested client.
How does mango flour compare to the regular flour or wheat in usage level or application?
Answer: GEMS Mango Flour is not recommended to be used in full 100% in bread recipes unlike wheat
or other regular flours. GEMS Mango Flour’s recommended usage level for cooking and baking is from
10% to 50% of the flour requirements in the recipe. Usage level can be adjusted based on taste
preference as mango flour has slightly bitter taste due to the presence of polyphenols (anti-oxidants).
However, this flour has been used by Magic Melt Foods, Inc. as a 100% flour recipe in some of their
products such as Energy Bar and Mango Bar.
Can the feed mix be used as total replacement to the regular feed available in the market?
Answer: GEMS Feed mix is not a total alternative to the regular feed available in the market.
Nonetheless, mixing about 500 grams to 1 kg of GEMS Feed Mix in 999.0-999.5 kg of usual feed formula
for poultry farms to make up a total feed of 1 ton is recommended for good results. It is preferred that
GEMS Feed Mix is added into the feed mixer prior to pelleting for small-scale or backyard livestock
raising, this can be mixed in the range from about 0.05% to about 0.1% of the feed formula.
